Study Guide for the School Year
August 5th, 2026

As the school year gets under way in Flossmoor and New Lenox, IL, you’ve got a lot going on. New classes. New teachers. New activities. New books and supplies and . . . well, it’s a lot! If orthodontic treatment is one of those new experiences, we have some suggestions to help you enjoy the year with a confident smile.
You may not have realized it, but the skill sets you’ve developed for school are useful beyond the classroom—you can use those same skills to help you achieve your orthodontic goals. If you’re going to school with braces, aligners, or appliances for the first time, this orthodontic study guide will help you maintain a healthy, stress-free smile:
Do Your Homework
Oral hygiene is more important than ever when you’re in orthodontic treatment. Plaque and food particles collect around braces and fixed appliances. If you’ve been brushing at home twice a day for two minutes and flossing once a day, good work! But now it’s time to level up your cleaning routine.
While you’re in treatment, you might need to brush and floss more often, whether several times a day or after each meal or snack. Follow Dr. Pope’s recommendations for brushing and flossing to help keep your smile cavity free.
The right tools will make life easier. Special brushes, flosses, and rinses designed for orthodontics can make cleaning your teeth easier and more effective. Electric toothbrushes and water flossers can be a game changer when it comes to removing plaque and food particles from tricky spaces. Talk to your orthodontist to learn the best tools and techniques for home care.
Essential Supplies
Put together a kit for your backpack or locker so you’ll always have the orthodontic supplies you need on hand. These tools will help you manage any expected—and unexpected—challenges while you’re away from home. Depending on your type of treatment, your kit might include:
- Travel toothbrush in a ventilated case (bacteria aren’t fans of fresh air!)
- Travel size toothpaste
- Orthodontic floss and interproximal brushes (for stubborn food particles around brackets and wires)
- Small mirror to make sure your smile and braces are food-free
- Dental wax to prevent irritation from loose wires or brackets
- Extra rubber bands for those who use them
- Your appliance case to prevent damaging or losing your retainer or aligners
- Your orthodontist’s phone number for emergencies
Add any other items you think will be helpful, and you’ll be prepared to handle any orthodontic-related issues throughout the day.
Follow Directions
Your orthodontist’s treatment plan is carefully designed to make your beautiful, healthy smile a reality as soon as possible—and the plan works best when you follow it!
- Wear your aligners, appliances, or elastics for the recommended number of hours each day. That’s the quickest way to a healthier smile.
- If you wear braces, see Dr. Pope for regularly scheduled adjustments.
- If you wear aligners, follow your orthodontist’s schedule each time you change trays. Changing to a new set of aligners too soon can cause stressful pressures on your teeth and jaws. Changing trays too late can delay your progress.
Any Questions? Ask!
Asking questions is one of the best ways to learn. Your orthodontic team has years of education and experience to help you answer some of the questions you have about navigating your school day.
Which cafeteria foods are orthodontic-friendly? Can you play a brass or wind instrument in band? If you play school sports, how do you wear a mouthguard with braces?
Your orthodontic team at Orthodontic Associates, LTD. has the answers—or knows how to help you find them. Work with your team to make sure that you’re able to enjoy all the possibilities of the school year, from classroom to lunchroom to extracurriculars, with a healthy confident smile!

The number one goal of orthodontic treatment is to give you or your child a good bite, meaning straight teeth that work well with the teeth in the opposite jaw. A good bite makes it easier for you to eat, chew, and speak. It can enhance your dental health and your overall health, and may well improve your self-esteem. As a part of your comprehensive dental health care plan, orthodontic treatment can help you retain you teeth—and your smile—for a lifetime.

Invisalign clear aligners can be a great option for improving the look of your smile.
There are several reasons why some people's teeth grow in crooked, overlapping, or twisted. Some people's mouths are too small for their teeth, which crowds the teeth and causes them to shift. In other cases, a person's upper and lower jaws aren't the same size or are malformed. Most often, crooked teeth are inherited traits just as the color of your eyes or hair. Other causes of crooked teeth are early loss of baby or adult teeth, undue pressure on the teeth and gums, misalignment of jaw after facial injury, or common oral health problems in children such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or prolonged use of a bottle or pacifier.

While mouthwash is not an alternative to regular brushing and flossing, it can help keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy. There are several different types of mouthwashes available, and all of them will help do different things for your smile. The most common types of mouthwashes are:

Fluoride – a mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay – can help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties: topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth. Topical fluoride includes toothpastes and mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides are swallowed in the form of a dietary supplement.

Let’s face it: sports-related injuries are common among children, let alone teens with braces. In a recent survey, the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, discovered that 70 percent of parents said their biggest worry is that their child will get hurt while playing sports. But 67 percent admitted that their child doesn’t wear a mouth guard when participating in organized sports such as football, basketball, baseball and soccer. That’s why

There are a variety of foods Drs. Anthony Maoloni & Spencer Pope want you to avoid while you're wearing braces. Some foods can occasionally damage braces, but certain foods can bend the wires or even break the brackets on your braces. If you’re wearing braces, you should avoid starch, sugar and gummy foods, as these foods can be difficult to remove during brushing. Foods that are high in sugar and starch tend to cause plaque, cavities and even tooth decay.
True orthodontic emergencies are very rare, but when they do occur we are available to you. As a general rule, you should call the office when you experience severe pain or when you have a painful appliance problem that you can't take care of yourself. We’ll be able to schedule an appointment with Drs. Maoloni & Pope.
